Professor Lant Pritchett is a globally renowned development economist whose work over the past three decades has shaped international thinking on economic development, education, governance, and systems change. Widely recognized for applying economic principles to complex development challenges, he has played a leading role in influencing policy reforms and development strategies across the world.
Professor Pritchett worked at the World Bank from 1988 to 2007, where he contributed extensively to research and policy development on economic growth, poverty reduction, education, and public sector reform. He later joined the Harvard Kennedy School, where he taught from 2000 to 2018 and served as Faculty Chair of the Master in Public Administration in International Development (MPA/ID) Programme.
His research spans a broad range of development issues, including economic growth, education, labor mobility, state capability, governance, and foreign aid effectiveness. He has authored more than one hundred books, journal articles, and working papers and has received over 50,000 citations, making him one of the most influential voices in development economics.
Professor Pritchett has a distinguished record of translating innovative ideas into practical policy solutions at both national and global levels. In 2006, he drew international attention to the emerging learning crisis in developing countries and advocated for a stronger focus on foundational learning outcomes. His recommendations influenced global education policy and were later reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015, as well as the World Bank’s commitment to eliminating learning poverty.
His influential work with economist David Dollar on the effectiveness of foreign aid argued for “selectivity, not conditionality” in development assistance. Their research helped reshape World Bank practices and contributed to the establishment of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which adopted these principles as a core part of its development model.
Professor Pritchett earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Brigham Young University in 1983 and a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1988.
